Autism Supports at Fairport Day Services

On-site supports Fairport Day Services offers a wide variety of services and supports for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We have a multidisciplinary team of clinicians available on-site. There is a full-time Speech-Language Pathologist and Occupational Therapist, as well as a Behavior Intervention Specialist and Behavior Technician. We work together, along with the rest of a person’s team, to address social/communication deficits, sensory needs, and behavioral excesses and deficits. What is Health Homes? The name is very deceiving. It should be called ‘Care Management’ because that’s what a Health Home does. Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule training In October 2018, Dr. Susan Chlebowski and I attended a three-day training in White Plains, NY to learn about an assessment tool called the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd edition (ADOS-2). The ADOS-2 assesses and diagnoses autism spectrum disorders across age, developmental level, and language skills. The training was very interactive and we observed clinicians administering the ADOS-2 to a young child as well as to an adult. We then went through the assessment tool as a large group to learn how to rate the behaviors we observed in order to formulate a diagnosis. What …

Youth with autism can get job training

As Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis increases, how can we help prepare youth on the spectrum for adulthood?  In April of 2018 the Arc of Monroe’s Job Path service launched the Autism Community Employment Initiative (ACE Initiative) to help high-school aged youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  This service is in collaboration with Norman Howard and provides students with a short-term internship program that teaches work readiness skills.  Norman Howard works with ACCES-VR to place students in this service. Before the internship begins, students participate in after-school work readiness training to prepare for the experience.  This training focuses on regulating emotions, handling …
