A Heartfelt Message from The Arc of Monroe

COVID-19, Staff Perspectives

A Heartfelt Message from The Arc of Monroe:

It has been a year since the first reported case of COVID-19, and throughout these past twelve months, we have persevered even though they have been stressful and traumatic. Many of us have mourned the loss of loved ones, loved ones contracting the virus, remote learning. We have worked through the challenge of how best to care for children, elderly parents, friends, neighbors and the health of our community.

We will be forever changed by this collective experience, and I believe we will emerge with a different perspective in critical areas, including how we work, learn, care for the people we support and live our lives.

It’s clear that this has been a marathon and not a sprint. As I see it, we’re moving through three phases. The first phase is triage: the immediate response when time is of the essence and it’s all about urgent action to help those most in need. The second phase is embracing our new normal, where we’re challenging old assumptions and adopting more efficient and empathetic ways of operating. The third phase is about new opportunities, where we drive systemic and structural changes for the better in areas like health, education and work.

In the midst of the crisis, I am more convinced than ever that we have the resilience, the grit and the resourcefulness to get through this together. I am heartened by the many stories, big and small, of how people are doing everything in their power to address urgent needs and find solutions that work. I am inspired by our employees across the organization who are taking the initiative to help people we support in ways like never before.  Our front line staff, our unspoken HEROES.  I am blessed and proud to work for an organization in which our staff are committed and dedicated during unprecedented times-we are in it together.

Over the last 12 months, employees have created and implemented solutions for new ways of service delivery and ensuring that the people we support remain safe and well.  You all played a major role in this, and you were successful in doing so.  Also inspiring to me has been our COVID taskforce team. This team has collaborated together in so many different ways around the clock ensuring that we stand true to our mission, vision and always focusing on our top priority—the safety and wellbeing of the people we support and our employees.  I am forever grateful to be working with a high performing team!

Equally powerful are the stories of our staff who are innovative in creative ways to make a difference in the lives of the people we support.  What I love about these stories is what they say about our collective response in a time of crisis. As a community, we are smart, compassionate and resourceful. Our instinct is to reach out across boundaries to make things happen. We were in it together and overcame hurdles and we looked for ways to deliver a solution directly into the hands of those most in need.

I am proud and inspired by the way our organization has risen to this challenge-with flexibility, resilience, courage and a caring heart.  Thank you for your enormous contributions.  Let’s continue to work together across all parts of our organization and keep going strong. We Are Family, and we are in this together. You continue to make The Arc of Monroe stand proud and tall!
