Human Resources

From Direct Support to Human Resources

Staff Perspectives

Completely by happenstance in college Michelle Bubel-Kempa had an internship in the human services field and fell in love with it.  She went on to graduate from college with a degree in human services.

Started began her career as a Direct Support Professional and was involved in opening Ward Hill and also worked at Clover Hills when that opened. Based on experience she was promoted to Residence Manager soon thereafter.

Career opportunity and advancement

Her next step was to transition to the Recreation Department in Lambert.  It was in this position that she gained a lot of skills and confidence and learned more about the agency.  While she was there was asked to develop what we know today as the RIT Enrichment program.

Michelle re-entered a role in Residential and worked for a number of years as the Manager of our houses on Ward, Clover, Chili, and Penfield, then became the Assistant Director in Residential.

At this time Human Resources was a small department.  Michelle wrote a proposal for a position called a Hiring Manager that would be within HR with a focus on residential.  The creation of this position would help cut overtime costs, and decrease the time managers were spending interviewing and hiring.  It was a result of this proposal that Michelle moved to the Human Resources department.

Why the Arc of Monroe

“I look forward to going to work every day.  How often do you hear people say that?” asks Michelle.

She’s also had good strong managers who were role models to her over the years.  They were able to recognize her strengths and help her grow professionally.

“I love what we do as an agency.  It’s about who we support; the advocacy we provide in the community; helping Rochester know what the people we support are capable of. We’re all differently abled.”

Professional advice

Michelle recommends finding a job you love and surround yourself with leaders that will support you and help you grow in your career.
