“In A Different Key” is the highly anticipated documentary about the history of autism and tracking of the very first case recorded in the United States. A mother tracks down the first person ever diagnosed with autism, now an elderly man in rural Mississippi, to learn if his life story holds promise for her own autistic son. Her journey exposes a startling record of cruelty and kindness alike, framed by forces like race, money and privilege – but leads to hope that more of us are learning to have the backs of those who are “different.”

Creators Caren Zucker and John Donvan, both award-winning journalists, have teamed up since 2000 to tell the stories of autism. Through their reports on ABC and PBS, they’ve shared accounts of resilience, compassion and love in a society that can be cruel and filled with misunderstanding and negativity toward those on the spectrum. In 2010 they wrote an article in the Atlantic magazine in which they tracked down one of the first children to be diagnosed with autism in 1943. The fascinating life story of Donald Triplett, now in his 80s, led to the book, In a Different Key, published in 2016. It went on to become a New York Times bestseller and was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in the general nonfiction category.

Desiring to reach a broader audience, the two worked together to produce and direct a documentary film of the same title. Like the magazine article and the book, Triplett became a central figure in the documentary. “In A Different Key” won the Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Oxford Film Festival, and the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Sonoma International Film Festival. The documentary features an original musical score by New Orleans jazz great Wynton Marsalis.
