Grant makes housing renovations possible

Renovations in two of our residential houses are complete! These projects are made possible by a grant from Access to Home. Project #1 A tight kitchen space is opened up to accommodate everyone. This particular kitchen serves 10 people plus staff. An update is much-needed as many of the residents use wheelchairs and are unable to reach counters and appliances. The kitchen was very closed in there wasn’t much room for movement. Renovations include new appliances, lower counters, and an island on wheels that can be moved as necessary.  Architect Dave Strabel worked closely with our team here to provide …

Mike celebrates a 37-year career

Staff Perspectives

Mike Jennison is celebrating 37 years with the Arc of Monroe! He began his career as a Maintenance Technician for nine houses after which he moved into our facilities department as Manager, and is now Project Manager. His main focus is fire and safety issues, certifications, and OFPC audits, visiting all the houses and day programs to make sure everyone is compliant. Beyond the above he manages renovations and preservation at all locations across the agency. The agency has seen his kids grown up and now grandkids. Colleagues and supervisors have always supported him during the hard times.  Mike describes …

Both options provide a supported apartment setting where people can make friends, form a supportive community, and work towards living more independently. Supported Apartments at Fernwood Fernwood Apartments is a great option for people who are working towards living independently in the community. The apartments are in Irondequoit area and is on a bus line. It provides on-site staff support from 6am to 10pm daily, and there is a 24 hour manager on call to support as needed. Jewish religion celebrated

Programs and Services

Religion is important in the lives of people we support.  In three of the residential homes we support most of the people practice Judaism.  In these three particular homes Arc staff helps the Jewish residents practice their faith and respect traditions. The houses on Farm Brook, Havens and Shaftsbury all have kosher kitchens.  For people who are Orthodox Jewish this is very important.  The houses keep separate dishes and utensils—one set for dairy, one set for meat.
