2020 has been the year of “the pivot.” When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it turned nearly every area of the Rochester community upside down. The MCC Experience Program at The Arc of Monroe was no exception. Monroe Community College (MCC) Experience is a higher education transitional service that prepares participants for eventual community employment. People learn relevant, marketable employment skills and acquire vocational internship and volunteer experience in various departments on and off MCC campus. About MCC Experience MCC Experience is a higher education transitional service that prepares people such as Tori for employment. In fact, one of the reasons that I was interested in an internship with the Arc was its’ dedication to providing care and services to neurodivergents; a group which is either looked down upon or ignored. I am starting my first Pathways semester this semester. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, my day starts off with meeting Molly, one of the Arc staff, at the Transit Center. We meet at Gate 11 and then take Bus 55 to the Brighton MCC campus. Paid summer internships prepare youth for employment

Programs and Services

Summer Transition Employment Program, or STEP, is a paid internship program offered through Job Path, a division of the Arc of Monroe.  The internship program is in collaboration with ACCES-VR, the Rochester City School District and Greece School District.  City and Greece schools work with ACCES-VR to identify the youth who are a good fit for this program.  STEP provides high school students with work readiness training prior to the paid internship. Students receive 15 hours of work readiness training April through June.  The summer internship lasts six weeks and each intern is supported by Job Path Employment Specialists who …

As Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis increases, how can we help prepare youth on the spectrum for adulthood?  In April of 2018 the Arc of Monroe’s Job Path service launched the Autism Community Employment Initiative (ACE Initiative) to help high-school aged youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  This service is in collaboration with Norman Howard and provides students with a short-term internship program that teaches work readiness skills.  Norman Howard works with ACCES-VR to place students in this service. Before the internship begins, students participate in after-school work readiness training to prepare for the experience.  This training focuses on regulating emotions, handling …

What is Project SEARCH®? Brianna is a Project SEARCH® participant through the Rochester City School District.  Project SEARCH® is a one year, school to work transition program that began at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.  Project SEARCH® combines classroom instruction with meaningful internship experiences to meet the goal of employment for each participant. Brianna’s Internship Through Project SEARCH® Brianna was formerly an intern at I-Square where she handled fresh produce and food. “My favorite thing to do was slicing pickles,” she said.  She learned the ropes on how to prepare foods as well as perform general cleaning duties, like washing dishes, sweeping the floors, taking out the trash …
