People with disabilities have the highest unemployment and underemployment rates of any minority group in the country. As part of The Arc of Monroe’s Job Path Employment Services program, an Arc of Monroe Intern will support initiatives that promote workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion for the disability community while making a meaningful impact on people in our Supported Employment Program.Weekly professional development session with access to a variety of industry leaders.

  • Learning about the variety of services. The Arc of Monroe provides through shadowing experiences each week.
  • Join a cohort of interns providing networking opportunities pre-graduation.
  • Short-term projects to support the delivery of employment services to people with disabilities.
  • Facilitate inclusive networking event for program participants to develop their work-readiness & self-advocacy skills.

A Week in the Lifeas an Intern

Mondays are the designated professional development and site shadow days. We’ll hear about a career path from a staff member, work on one professional skill, present a specific experience that connects to one of The Arc’s values, and spend time shadowing one of The Arc of Monroe’s various sites.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays will rotate between programs within Job Path. You’ll work on site specific tasks, gain experience working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and develop a person0-centered approach to your work.

Thursdays will be spent working with your internship cohort developing one long-term project to benefit people supported. The second half of the day will be spent on site specific tasks and managing your calendars for the following week.

Become an Intern at Job Path! As an Intern at Job Path, you are working directly with adults with IDD while showing respect, integrity and responsibility to them, as well as staff, and the community they work in.

Summary: Work directly with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to provide person centered support; promoting confidentiality, privacy, human dignity, uniqueness, and physical and emotional well-being while supporting the individual to lead a self-directed life. Support people to develop and maintain relationships, advocate for justice, fairness and equity and full community participation. An intern will show respect, integrity and responsibility for the individuals they support, other staff members and the community they work in.

Essential Functions:

  • Gain skills and knowledge in working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through site specific tasks and site shadowing throughout The Arc of Monroe
  • Rotate between SELF, Adult Project SEARCH, and Job Path offices throughout the week to assist with different tasks and programs
  • Complete individually assigned tasks, manage your own calendar, appointments, question logs, and conduct phone calls
  • Work with internship cohort to develop one long-term project over the course of the internship to benefit people supported
  • Learn a person-centered approach in some aspects of the supported employment process, such as conducting surveys, reviewing intake forms, and completing basic documentation
  • Create and present a values journal based on the 6 core values of The Arc of Monroe: camaraderie, creativity, empathy, excellence, integrity, and perseverance
  • Create and present on the internship at the end of the 8 weeks to EMT and senior directors
  • Enhance and learn new skills through experiential learning
  • Bolster soft skills that employers seek through weekly professional development presentations
  • Network and build relationships with employees throughout The Arc of Monroe
  • Successfully complete required, on-going training requirements within mandated timeframes
  • Intervene immediately if abuse is suspected, notify the New York State Justice Center and follow the Code of Ethics set forth by the NYS Justice Center of the suspected occurrence
  • Ensure that behavior is professional and consistent with The Arc’s culture, mission, values, philosophy, and policies and procedures, including treating individuals and others with dignity and respect

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Must be currently enrolled in or a May 2026 graduate from a 2- or 4-year college program
  • No experience working with IDD population required
  • Preferred good academic standing and minimum of 3.0 GPA preferred
  • Authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship by the company

Licensure/Certification

  • Valid NYS driver’s license required. Must have access to timely and reliable transportation to transport self

Other Skills/Knowledge/Experience

  • Openness and willingness to learn new skills and receive feedback
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining effective levels of consumer service
  • Ability to stay calm and level-headed under pressure
  • Must demonstrate good judgement and independent decision making and understanding of when to escalate issues
  • Ability to foster teamwork between all team members via open communication, sharing of responsibilities, and a positive, constructive attitude
  • Basic computer literacy, including use of email, Microsoft Office, and internet

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, push, pull, lift, climb and kneel
  • Exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently

Working Conditions, Position Type, Expected Hours of Work, and Location

  • This position is a paid, 8-week, 16 hours per week, internship. This is a set schedule of Monday – Thursday from 8 am – 12 pm. You will be expected to be available for all internship days
  • This internship will take place in-person throughout Monroe County. No remote work available. Housing will not be provided.
  • Frequently exposed to various conditions at employer sites ranging from proximity to moving mechanical parts, exposure to high heat, chemicals, dust, fumes and poor ventilation
  • May be occasionally exposed to individuals who have the potential to carry a communicable disease or blood borne pathogen
